COMMUNITY-FOCUSED HEALTHCARE WITH A LEGACY OF SERVICE

Welcome to Centerville Clinics

Centerville Clinics is a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) dedicated to providing total health care for the entire community. Serving Fayette, Greene, and Washington counties, Centerville Clinics offers comprehensive medical, dental, and behavioral health services to patients across southwestern Pennsylvania, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.

Our story began in the early 1950s, when Joseph A. Yablonski, an International Board Member of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), recognized a significant barrier facing coal miners in southwestern Pennsylvania. Although miners were eligible for medical and hospital benefits through the UMWA, many couldn’t access those benefits due to a lack of local physicians. Yablonski envisioned a solution: bring more doctors (especially specialists) to rural mining communities.

With the support of local unions, a farmhouse and apple barn were purchased in Centerville Borough, Washington County. These buildings were remodeled to include clinical exam rooms, a laboratory, and X-ray services. The project was incorporated as Union Miners Building, Inc., and on April 27, 1955, Dr. Robert Schwartz saw the clinic’s first patient. That day marked the beginning of what would grow into the Centerville Clinics network.

From the start, the clinic operated with a team of two full-time physicians and 25 part-time specialists. The program quickly expanded. In 1956, the California Office opened, becoming the organization’s first permanent satellite site. By 1960, Centerville had already added a new wing to accommodate its growing medical staff and patient demand. Then, in 1961, the Carmichaels Clinic opened with full medical, laboratory, and X-ray services—personally scouted and secured by Mr. Yablonski himself.

Throughout the 1960s and ’70s, the network continued to grow. In 1973, the Centerville facility was officially renamed the Joseph A. Yablonski Memorial Clinic in recognition of his vision and tireless advocacy, and a second expansion followed the next year.

Today, Centerville Clinics is proud to operate 12 locations throughout the area, all of which are recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMH). We are the 5th largest of the 46 FQHCs in Pennsylvania and continue to deliver integrated, patient-focused services rooted in the principles that started it all: community, access, and compassion.
