BLACK LUNG DISEASE TREATMENT & RESPIRATORY TESTING
Our Black Lung Program
Breathing problems can make everyday activities feel exhausting, and for many in our community, those symptoms are linked to years of hard work in coal mining or similar industries. Conditions like black lung and other chronic respiratory diseases are serious, but with the right testing, monitoring, and education, patients can take control of their health and improve their quality of life.
Under the Direction of Dr. Daniel Holt, Centerville Clinics is an Alpha-1 Clinical Research Center. Alpha-1 Foundation Clinical Resource Centers (CRCs) are an integrated network of research institutions and physicians specializing in Alpha-1 treatment, education, and care. CRCs provide comprehensive care to Alphas, including specialized care for lung disease and liver disease. In addition, CRCs provide patients with the resources and information needed to manage their Alpha-1. All CRCs go through a rigorous designation process and are required to adhere to the highest standard of care and best practices. CRCs also play a critical role in helping the Foundation recruit patients for the Alpha-1 Research Registry.
Centerville Clinics is proud to offer coal miners and persons with occupational exposures to coal dust (such as steel workers, railroad workers, asbestos removal workers, contractors, etc.) the services of our Black Lung Program.
If you're concerned about black lung symptoms, we’re here to help. Call us today at (724) 632-6801 to learn more or schedule an evaluation.
COAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS TREATMENT
Support for Chronic Breathing & Lung Conditions
Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, more commonly known as black lung disease, is a progressive and potentially disabling respiratory condition caused by prolonged inhalation of coal dust. It most commonly affects individuals who have worked in or around coal mines, but similar symptoms may develop in people exposed to other types of occupational dust and irritants.
Common black lung symptoms include:
- Shortness of breath
- Chronic cough
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Fatigue
Left unaddressed, these symptoms can significantly reduce quality of life and may worsen over time.
At Centerville Clinics, we provide baseline and annual re-evaluations, pulmonary function testing (PFT), chest X-rays, and clinical exams as part of our Coal Workers and Chronic Respiratory Disease Program. Patients also receive one-on-one respiratory education and resources to help manage symptoms and improve overall lung function. If necessary, our team can help you navigate next steps with your provider or connect you with specialists for further evaluation.
Beyond testing and treatment, Centerville Clinics is proud to continue a legacy of supporting Pennsylvania’s coal mining communities. We were founded in 1955 by the United Mine Workers of America to serve miners and their families, and that mission still guides our work today.
Patients do not need to have a confirmed diagnosis to qualify for services. Our program welcomes anyone with respiratory concerns, whether you’re looking for your first evaluation or returning for an annual update. Appointments are available throughout the year, and we make it easy to get started—no referral required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I be admitted to the Black Lung Program even if I’ve never worked in a coal mine?
Yes! You don’t have to be a coal worker (or have a formal diagnosis) to receive treatment through Centerville Clinics’ program. We welcome anyone experiencing chronic respiratory symptoms. Our team provides education, diagnostic testing, and symptom management strategies to help you breathe easier and feel more in control of your health.
What happens during my first visit to the Pulmonary Lab?
Your first appointment includes a full medical history, review of your work and exposure background, and several diagnostic tests. These may include a chest X-ray, pulmonary function testing (PFT), a breathing assessment, and an EKG. The results will help us understand your current lung function and guide future care recommendations.
What is a pulmonary function test, and why is it important?
Also called a respiratory breathing test, this test measures how well your lungs are working. It helps identify issues like airflow obstruction, restricted lung capacity, and oxygen exchange problems. These tests are a routine part of lung health evaluations and are used to track how your condition changes over time.
How do I schedule an appointment for the Black Lung Program?
Scheduling is simple! Just call us at (724) 632-6801 and let us know you’re interested in the program. Our team will walk you through what to expect, help you choose a convenient time, and answer any questions. Whether this is your first evaluation or an annual follow-up, we’re here to make the process easy.
