Cortney Smith earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Penn State University and Master of Science degree in Nursing at West Virginia Wesleyan for Family Nurse Practitioner. She also earned her post master's certification from Wilkes University as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
How has COVID impacted your practice?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns about mental health and substance use have grown, including concerns about suicidal ideation. In January 2021, 41% of adults reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorder. Our practice has grown tremendously in mental health with seeking treatment.
What are the biggest changes you have seen in healthcare?
When I was working as a Family Nurse Practitioner I saw healthcare changing with disparities in mental health services due to a multitude of factors. I knew then I needed to further my education in mental health to help serve patients of Centerville.
What is your passion?
My passion will always be advocating for others. Helping to change the societal dialogue at all levels for everyone to feel safe to ask for help with their mental health.
Why did you apply to Centerville Clinics?
I applied at Centerville Clinics to make an impact in the lives of my community where I live and work. I am honored to work for an organization in which I help the most vulnerable and at risk population of mental health.
What are you most proud of, whether in your practice or personal life?
I am most proud to be a mother to help raise a daughter to show kindness to others. I am proud to have been guided by my Faith to serve others and further my education.
